In 1993, the consortium of Saudi Techint Co. Ltd.-Techint International Construction Co./Yüksel İnşaat Saudia Co. Ltd was awarded the project. This system was designed to transmit desalinated water from the Yanbu industrial area to Yanbu city, Rayyis and Madinah with a capacity of 363,000 m³/day. The project consists of four different groups of work: pipeline, stations, reservoirs and housing compound.
For the pipeline portion of the project, Yüksel performed a wide variety of civil works such as trenching, sand bedding, sand padding, backfilling, wadi protection, protection of existing 32” line and construction of drain, vent, tap off, line valve stations and road maintenance along 60” and 32” steel pipelines (having a total length of 200 kilometres). For the stations and reservoirs portion of the project, Yüksel constructed a 4 x 140,000 m³ steel reservoir foundation (diameter of which is 101.8 metres) 10 x 50,000 m³ 1 x 35,000 m³, 2 x 25,000 m³, 2 x 5,000 m³,1 x 1,000 m³ reinforced concrete reservoirs together with related station buildings and site works such as storm water drainage, roads, walkways, fences and gates. For the housing compound portion of the project, Yüksel constructed 18 luxurious three floor buildings (108 flats) at Yanbu, a house at Musayjeed, two guest villas and a house in Medinah for SWCC employees, with a total gross construction area of 40,000 m², including all kinds of civil, architectural and electromechanical works.
