The capital city of Ankara is expanding both geographically and in terms of its population. The Ankaray-Light Rail Mass Transit System was implemented as a modern solution to the city’s growing transportation problems.
In 1991, Yüksel was awarded the contract by Ankara Metropolitan Municipality General Directorate of Electricity, Gas and Public Transportation to construct the Ankaray Light Rail Mass Transit System, the first ever project of its kind in Ankara, consisting of an 8.527 metre railway between Dikimevi and Sögütözü where the civil works were carried out by Yüksel and Bayındır Construction J.V., and the electromechanical works were implemented by Siemens, Breda, AEG and Simko who were the consortium partners for the contract. The project included 1.755 metres of bored tunnel, 4.917 metres of cut and covered tunnel, 11 stations (1.226 metres, 217 metres at grade (at ground level) and 412 metres below grade sections). The daily passenger capacity of the mass transit system reaches 350.000 and 11 trains operate for 18 hours a day.
